What the grader checks
- AI crawler rules: what your robots.txt says to GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot, Bytespider, meta-externalagent and others.
- Firewall blocks: we fetch your page as a browser and as AI crawlers and flag 403s, challenge pages and
cf-mitigatedheaders. - Content without JavaScript: how much text AI crawlers see in the raw HTML, on the homepage and up to 9 more pages from your sitemap.
- Metadata: title, meta description, H1, canonical and Open Graph tags on every crawled page.
- Structured data: JSON-LD types, with required properties checked for Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage, Article and SoftwareApplication.
- Entity signals: Organization sameAs links and whether Wikidata knows your brand with your domain as its official website.
- Answer-first structure: question-style H2/H3 headings followed by a short, direct answer.
- Freshness, speed and language: dateModified, Last-Modified and sitemap lastmod; time to first byte and HTML size; lang and hreflang.
- /llms.txt and sitemap.
- Ready-to-paste fixes: llms.txt, robots.txt and JSON-LD drafts for your site.
- Live AI sample: one real Perplexity question about your category, to see whether you're mentioned.
How the score works
| Area | Points | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| AI crawler access in robots.txt | 20 | 16 points for AI search and user-fetch bots (they decide whether you can be cited), 4 for training bots (blocking them is a business choice, so it costs little). |
| Firewall lets AI crawlers through | 12 | We fetch your homepage as a browser and as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot. A 403, a challenge page or a cf-mitigated header for a bot means robots.txt doesn't matter: the bot never sees the page. |
| Text visible without JavaScript | 12 | Most AI crawlers don't run JavaScript. 8 points for words in the homepage's raw HTML, 4 for the share of crawled pages with at least 150 words. |
| Title, description, H1, canonical, Open Graph | 10 | Answer engines use these to label and summarize pages. 7 points for the homepage, 3 for coverage across the other crawled pages. |
| Indexable page | 8 | A 200 status, no noindex, and HTTPS. |
| Structured data (JSON-LD), validated | 10 | Schema.org JSON-LD tells engines who you are and what each page is. 6 points for presence and types, 4 for having the required properties (Organization, LocalBusiness, Product, FAQPage, Article, SoftwareApplication). |
| Entity signals (sameAs, Wikidata) | 7 | Engines connect your site to a known entity through Organization sameAs links and a Wikidata item whose official website is your domain. |
| Answer-first structure | 6 | Question-style H2/H3 headings followed by a short direct answer (8-70 words) are easy for engines to quote. |
| Freshness signals | 4 | dateModified in JSON-LD, Last-Modified headers or sitemap lastmod within 90 days. Engines favor content that shows it is current. |
| Speed and page weight | 4 | AI fetchers have short timeouts. Time to first byte under 600 ms and HTML under 300 KB. |
| Language tags | 2 | An html lang attribute, and valid hreflang if you have language versions. |
| /llms.txt | 2 | A short Markdown guide for LLMs. Optional and still new, so it carries few points. |
| XML sitemap | 3 | Helps crawlers find your other pages; listing it in robots.txt is best. |
| Total | 100 |

FAQ
What is AEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) means making your site easy for AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews and Copilot to crawl, understand and cite. It overlaps with SEO but adds AI-specific crawlers, JavaScript-free content and machine-readable context.
Is the AEO grader really free?
Yes. You get 5 free checks per day per IP address with no signup and no email. Each check runs the full technical audit and, while the daily pool lasts, one live Perplexity question to see whether you are mentioned.
What does the grader check?
Your homepage plus up to 9 more pages from your sitemap: robots.txt rules for 21 AI crawlers (GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended, CCBot, Bytespider, meta-externalagent and more), whether your firewall blocks AI user agents, words visible without JavaScript, title, meta description, H1, canonical and Open Graph on every page, JSON-LD types and required properties, Organization sameAs and Wikidata, freshness dates, question-style headings with short answers, time to first byte, HTML size, language tags, /llms.txt and your XML sitemap.
How is the score calculated?
A fixed 100-point rubric: AI crawler access 20, firewall access 12, text without JavaScript 12, metadata 10, structured data with validation 10, indexability 8, entity signals 7, answer-first structure 6, freshness 4, speed 4, sitemap 3, language tags 2, llms.txt 2. The fix list is ordered by points you would gain.
What are the ready-to-paste fixes?
Every result includes a draft /llms.txt, a robots.txt that allows AI crawlers while keeping your existing disallow rules, and Organization, WebSite and FAQPage JSON-LD built from what we found on your pages. Copy them from the result page or download them as fixes.txt.
Why would my site be blocked even though robots.txt allows AI bots?
Firewalls and bot protection (for example Cloudflare's 'Block AI bots' or Bot Fight Mode) can return a 403 or a challenge page to AI crawlers before robots.txt matters. The grader requests your page as a normal browser and as GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot and compares the answers.
What is in the $9 full report?
Five real questions about your category asked to 10 engines: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Mistral and Meta AI. You see which engines mention or cite you and an excerpt of each answer. If fewer than 7 engines answer, you are not charged.
How do I pay for the full report?
The report is sold per use over x402: $9 in USDC on Base, paid from a crypto wallet or an x402-capable agent. There is no account or subscription. Card checkout is coming soon.
What is weekly tracking?
$19 prepaid buys 4 weekly runs of the 10-engine report (5 questions to each of 10 engines). You get a private link with a trend chart of your visibility and how competitors' share of mentions shifts. It's paid over x402 today; card checkout is coming soon. You get a short email after each weekly run, and the tracking link keeps the full history.
Do you store my results?
Results are saved at a shareable link for 30 days. Repeat checks of the same URL within 24 hours reuse the saved result.
